Doing research is a great extracurricular activity that you can get involved in during medical school!
First, check out the LMU-DCOM site for student research: https://www.lmunet.edu/debusk-college-of-osteopathic-medicine/scholarly-activity/student-research
Then, online explore the research that is going on at DCOM, or you can try to branch out and reach out to local teaching hospitals, UTK, or see if there is a summer research program in your hometown.
If you have any specific questions, reach out to the Director of Research: Dr. N. Freeman in Knoxville and Dr. A. Gromley in Harrogate.

Attend orientation and keep an eye on your email!
All incoming students will receive a few pieces of school gear at orientation!
Additionally, instead of having a library sell gear and keep the profits for the school, at DCOM we let the student organizations sell all things through out the school year as their fundraisers. Here are somethings that have been sold in the past: Patagonia, Yetis, scrubs, shirts, hats, socks, mugs, tumblers, badge holders, sweat pants, jackets, hoodies, and so much more!
**As we get closer to the school year, we are planning to add a page here on DCOMDO to showcase current and upcoming sales so you wont miss things.
There are many ways that groups can study together, and in the end its entirely up to those in the group. Remember, that you study group does not have to be your closest friends if chatting becomes a problem.
Here are some structure ideas:
Walk though difficult concepts together
Use the whiteboards to draw out complicated pathways to simplify them
Study alone together --> study quietly at you own pace, but use the peer pressure to stay focused
Go through practice questions together
Try using the "thumbs up" method where everyone reads the question on their own, puts their thumb up when they have an answer so that everyone has a chance to read and think in quiet.
To everyone:
Ask upperclassmen to show your their system, everyone does things a little different
The vast majority of students have some sort of touch screen device because you can write and draw out notes as needed.
Apple Users:
Find your balance with iPads (touch screen) and Macs
Use either Notability or Good Notes
Non-Apple Users:
Use OneNote to store all your PowerPoints and notes
Take advantage of folders and sub-folders to keep things organized
DO NOT PANIC! Many people have trouble adjusting to medical school and learning how to learn the material. Ask for help earlier than later.
Ask your mentor or other upperclassmen for advice
