So they were saying that they cant do a live video of the screen and still have the option to click “next slide” Why dont they point the video at the screen instead of the professor and still have the slide… All they have to do is change where the video points from the old version of mediasite to make everyone happy. That way if you like the new format of video on the screen (me) you can just make the video full screen and ignore the slides. Those who want to see the slides and click through them can.
Now that i just read Lucas’ i guess we are thinking the same way…

My wording was poor in my original post, as I by no means think the quizzes are easy, I just think that it is easier to earn points with an open book quiz than it will be to earn them on the test. I have a feeling that test 2 will be much tougher than the first so any hints as to the type of information we’re expected to know would be helpful, and I feel like I’ve learned just as much from the quizzes as I have from the lectures, whether or not the quiz score is good.

Just curious as to why so many people don’t want to take an open book quiz in which we have a possibility of earning 20 easy points and getting some good clues as to what will be on the actual exam (which will be MUCH tougher than the first one)?

Why not have a question and answer session with the IT department to reveal what options and capabilities actually are? This is a little embarrassing….why can’t a ‘Trial’ that has been thought out and scrutinized be done instead of knee-jerk reactions? The whole point of mediasite is to review material….if mediasite won’t support the old speed and slide indexing funtions with the current viewing screens then perhaps a request should be made to the mother company. Simple solution….focus the rear class camera on the front screen instead of the podium (as orginally requested)….problem solved. Come on folks….put your thinking caps on! Doesn’t really matter at this point anyway…all the drawing on the slides is during the first semester of first year…maybe future classes will benefit…if mediasite still exists then…..

Understood Dan and Drew… thank you for addressing my concerns.

So the numbers as I know them now are as follows:

4 people who were having a problem with the status quo
17 people who are going to have a problem with the new format (that’s the number of people on the losing end of this vote)

There is no perfect system, but it seems there will be more people disappointed with the change than the old system.

Again, thanks for addressing my questions and concerns.

Someone mentioned that reducing the screen size might reduce the amt of bandwidth these eat up, so that we can watch at 2x at home? I like the live feed, but not at the expense of speed options. I also use the slide selection options on the old format to go over a slide I missed during lecture, but I’d sacrifice it to keep the ppt live feed… Please, please fix the speed issues though! I can’t get anything other than 1x at home.

Seger, this decision was made by Dr. Williamson solely. In fact in class Lena asked if leaving the quizzes as is was an option and it was met with a resounding NO from Dr. W as that was NOT working. He stated only 2 things could happen and made us decide.

I believe the problem was that he was receiving several emails which required him to go in and reset the questions for those people and have them on their honor that they would not change their answers.

There is an option on this and the class as a whole is deciding with what we are presented. Remember most syllabi include the clause that they are subject to change with notice.

A few questions and comments:

1. These people who were kicked off their quizzes – were they on campus when they took the quizzes? If not, tough – Dr. Williamson sent out an email specifically stating that you would be wise to not wait until the last minute and to ensure that you have a secure and reliable internet connection prior to starting the quiz. Sorry.

2. Why is maintaining the status quo not an option on this survey?

3. As a followup to #2, how many people must have a problem with something to completely scrap the status quo without a vote?

I appreciate Dr. Williamson and the SGA attempting to find a resolution to a challenging situation, but I don’t think there is really a problem with the status quo.

If we aren’t able to stick with the status quo, I agree with Allan that the quizzes should be administered on Thursday mornings. This still doesn’t change the fact that some people may already have travel plans during the new time slot (not me this time folks), and made those plans under the premise that the syllabus, schedules, and emails from Dr. Williamson regarding how quizzes would be administered could all be trusted. If we change the status quo on this, trust is clearly gone. (Then again, I think history should tell us to be a bit skeptical about trusting the syllabus, schedule, etc. anyway).

Cynical? Yes, but “a cynic is an optimist with experience” (one of my favorite sayings)

I originally voted against the new Mediasite and I was right. I usually go to class so I only use mediasite to re listen to a lecture (which I like to do on double speed) or go over a specific slide or two that I didn’t quite catch in class (for which I use the slide finder/forwarder). I can no longer use mediasite the way I like to with the new format. Please change it back.

I would like it much more if it included the option to slide-select like the previous. Is there a way/option to do the old format with the live-feed version of the slides only in the box where you see the professor walking around? And keep the other box the same–the picture of the slide–so you can choose where in the lecture you want to be. The biggest downfall is definitely the inability to pick where in the lecture you want to start via slide chronicity.

I prefer the old format. I would rather see the professors’ faces versus the PP slides. I can see the PP slides on my screen. Also, what happened to the option of the slides on the side of the screen? It used to be that you could go to a specific slide (which were time-stamped also) and this is MUCH more time-efficient than what is currently in place.

I hate it. It helps some to see what they are circling or drawing but it isn’t that big of deal to see that as it is to be able to play it at double speed while I am sitting on my sofa rather than having to be hard wired. I also don’t like not being able to view slide by slide. It is really hard to go back and want to listen to something and have to slowly try and find the time they talked about it.
