In addition to all the study questions, Deke is always ready to help anyone struggling with the material. People are constantly stopping by his study room to ask for clarification or assistance and he is always prepared to help. Deke is very involved outside of class as well. He always at fundraisers and community service projects. Deke is an exceptional member of the Class of 2014 and we are all proud to have him in our class.

Congratulations Sara Boyd and Jonathan Chen December’s Student DOs of the Month!

Class of 2014: Sara Boyd

Sara makes study guides for every lecture and distributes them to anyone in the class that would like them! Without her study guides many members of the class would be lost. In addition to all the study guides she makes she is always there to lend a helping hand for any fundraisers or other activities. Sara has been extremely helpful to the first years by being an OPP lab TA and always assisting with pre-exam reviews. The class of 2014 is extremely luckily to have Sara!

“She has tirelessly worked to send out complete, concise study guides which have helped aide my learning for exams greatly.”

“We know we would all be failing without Sara.”

“She does something special for her class mates… daily.”

Class of 2015: Jonathan Chen

Jonathan has been a huge asset to the class of 2015. He has taken time out of his studying to make sure others learn the material. During anatomy lab he uses his own lab time to point out the landmarks to anyone who asks. He even schedules time outside of lab to meet with his classmates. He does all this in a kind way and seems to truly care about other’s success. Jonathan is a valuable member of the class of 2015.

“He is humble about how much he knows and appears to only care about everyone’s success.”

“He is selfless, caring, and always shows humility.”

Thank you Sara and Jonathan for all you do! You deserve those parking spots!

Congratulations ADAM BROWN and ROB GRESSER November’s Student DOs of the Month!

Class of 2014: Adam Brown

Adam has been a huge asset to both classes! Today he is taking time from studying for Renal to hold a biochemistry review for the first years. This is in addition to the time he took to make an awesome review power point for them over fall break. He is a great tutor and friend to people in both classes. Adam always takes time from his own studying to go over concepts with his classmates. He is the reason some students passed cardiology. Adam does all this while making time for his daughter. Adam is what every DCOM student should strive to be.

Class of 2015: Rob Gresser

Since the beginning of the year, Rob has taken his time to help others. He has sent out multiple study guides and helped his classmates. Over fall break he went above and beyond when media site broke down. He talked to IT countless times and kept the class informed so everyone could remain calm. Rob is still extremely involved in the class while having a family. The Class of 2015 is lucky to have Rob.

Thank you Adam and Rob for all you do! Enjoy your parking spots!

Class of 2014: Andrew Mathew

Andrew has continued to show how dedicated he is to DCOM and the Class of 2014. For the White Coat BBQ he was the only person to volunteer to stay and help clean up. This dedication to the class and the new students is truly exceptional and appreciated by all in attendance. Over the past year he has contributed to his fellow students and always been there to give others the needed motivation to continue. Andrew has repeatedly gone above and beyond the expectations of a DCOM student.

“He signed up for the job that no one else wanted to do, and did it with a smile on his face.”

“We need more students with his kind of attitude at DCOM.”

Class of 2015: Tim Attride

Tim has contributed significantly to the Class of 2015. Despite having a long drive to school, he still comes everyday with a smile on his face and makes every effort to contribute. His study guides for MFM have been invaluable to the majority of the class. He is always at school early w ready to help anyone that approaches him. Tim has been very helpful to his class. DCOM is extremely lucky to have him.

“He’s a really good example about what dedication, motivation and what responsibility is all about.”

Hey 2015,

Katie Clark has graciously provided some PowerPoint slides she made last year to help with reviewing the anatomy models without having to go into the lab. I’ve attached them below. Although these might not replace time spent actually handling the models in the lab, they are a great tool for quick review before an exam. Enjoy and good luck!

P.S. The files are a little large and may take a while to download.

UPDATE: Katie has provided a third set of slides which I’ve attached below. From now on, I’ll just keep posting her slides below as they become available.

This year we will be awarding two students every month. One from the Class of 2014, one from the Class of 2015.

Class of 2014: TD Williams
TD has continued to go above and beyond this year. He holds EKG reviews, ACLS classes, leads study groups and is always around to lend a helping hand. Despite living in Knoxville and having a family he still always makes it to class and group meetings. TD’s experience as a flight medic has made him an invaluable resource to the Class of 2014. He is not only a great student and teacher but he is also a great person.
“He is a great role model for the rest of us, and as future doctors we should aspire to be a little more like him.”
“During his time at DCOM he has impacted nearly every member of the class through his many endeavors.”

Class of 2015: Zachary Tomlinson
Zachary was a post-bac student last year. He was always helpful to the Class of 2014 in anatomy lab. Now, as a first year Zachary is continuing to help his fellow students. He has gone above and beyond to counsel and lead the new post-bac class and the Class of 2015. He took time from his own schedule to set up review sessions for the new class. Zachary is a great asset to the school; we are all excited and lucky to have him as a member of the Class of 2015!
“I would just like to say how impressed I am with his support and help.”

Congratulations again to two well-deserving students!

On behalf of the entire SGA, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the incoming class of 2015. We hope you enjoy your orientation week and are looking forward to our Q&A session and group tours with you all later in the week.

I just want to point out a few things that may be of use to you in the very near future. First, take a look at the very top of this page and you should see several links to frequently-used sites. A lot of students simply bookmark DCOMDO and use it to get to the rest of these sites. Next, on the right, you should see some expandable links for OMS I, OMS II, etc. These links will drill down by year and class name and will take you directly to study materials that others have posted. Finally, if you look under the big banner at the top of the page you should see a “Classifieds” link. This is a good place to look if you are needing a used book or something, so just keep it in mind.

DCOMDO.COM is intended to be used by everyone in some way or another. Whether you’re trying to buy some used books, checking the time for your next club meeting, or looking to share a study guide with the class, you’ll find what you need on this site. And if you don’t, just email me at support@dcomdo.com and I’ll try to help you out.

Good luck in your first semester,

Adam Tarrence OMS II

The Claiborne community efforts of Doggy Dash raised an additional $800 on the March 13th 2011 sunny race day. This, added to our $2400 from sponsors, t-shirt sales, and previous registrants, equals $3200 raised for the Claiborne Animal Shelter. Over 150 race participants joined in on the fun with the 5K, doggy talent show, face-painting, and music. Our race participants came from near and far, from Claiborne County to Knoxville. Our first place male, Maxwell Freytag, is a junior at Claiborne County High School; and our first place female, Nicole Howe, is a resident of Knoxville. Close runner-ups included LMU-DCOM staff and students, such as Cass Cherry and Megan Mars.

Other prizes consisted of top male and female runners with a dog: Michael Roessler, Chris Heberer, Brittany Bemis, and Caroline Chadwell, respectively. Our talent show winners were Rebecca Hardman (“Best Bark”: Porter), Chris Heberer (“Cutest Pup”: Zip), Cassie Hudson (“Best Trick”: Ollie), Brandon Chappell (“Best Tail Wag”: CJ), and Adam McKenzie (“Best Spirit”: Shada).

It would be difficult to name all of those who helped make Doggy Dash 5K successful, so allow me to thank a few: Diana O’Young, Audrey Smith, Jason Greenhagen, Gene Jalbert, Erin Lenz, Amy Drittler, and Justin Mitchell. We collaborated with several student organizations at LMU-DCOM (SOMA, SOSA, Health Equity, SAACOFP, Neuro/Psych, Peds, and International Med Club) to fulfill a vision that began in early November of 2010. Furthermore, participation with the board of the Claiborne Animal Shelter, LMU-DCOM faculty, and several sponsoring local businesses made this event one to remember. We are truly a supportive community and one that desires “a safer community through responsible pet ownership.” Such is the work of the Claiborne Animal Shelter.

The COSGP has set up a new way to record Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health (TOUCH) hours. Instead of recording your hours on the TOUCH form I have previously emailed out, you will now be logging your hours online. Each community service event will have to be logged in separately. When you have submitted your hours, the information will be forwarded to a Google document. The Google document is associated with my personal Google account, so any information listed will not be seen by anyone who isn’t supposed to see it. Here is the link to start recording your hours:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDJLQ1MwbUN3Y2VnXzRvdGVZVjJaWVE6MA

It is pretty self explanatory, but if you have any questions let me know.

REMINDER:
OMS I- your volunteer hours have to be in the time frame from the first day of class this year until March 31, 2011.
OMS II-IV-your volunteer hours have to be from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011.

Students with 50 or more TOUCH hours will receive a Silver TOUCH certificate. Students with 100 or more TOUCH hours will receive a Gold TOUCH certificate. Each individual will be honored during the TOUCH Ceremony during the spring semester.

While the volunteer hours will be kept track on an individual basis, on March 31st 2001, members of the community service committee will look at all of your hours and make sure that they fit the TOUCH criteria. After that, they are then sent to the national committee for further evaluation. So please make sure that your hours follow the guidelines so in the end you don’t have less hours than you thought because some of them didn’t count.

General Guidelines for what constitutes TOUCH hours- I have attached. They are far from specific and the COSGP is working on a set standard of regulations as to what they will accept for TOUCH hours. The main point is to make sure they are community orientated. For example: giving tours at school, tutoring, being an OPP TA and helping out with ACLS do not count towards touch hours.

Again, these are guidelines set by COSGP. When you turn your TOUCH hours in at the end of March this year, I and the community service committee members will make sure all the hours fit into the guidelines. Then the hours are sent to the COSGP where they go over the schools hours again and make sure they comply.
