GALA tshirts going to a good cause!!!

This year, tshirts are being sold for the Gala and the proceeds go to an AWESOME cause!  When you buy a shirt, part of your money will be donated to the “9th Annual Walter “Big Ed” Purkey Jr. Memorial Fishing Tournament” which will benefit the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville. This event is held each year in memory of our very own Lori Staudenmaier’s father, Walter Purkey Jr. He was a nonsmoker who was diagnosed with lung cancer on December 28, 2001 and passed away six short weeks later at the age of 42. Lori and her family honor his life and promote cancer awareness through one of his favorite sports. To date, they have raised over $13,000 for cancer research through the ACS Relay for Life!!

The tournament is the day after the Gala at Anderson County Park near Knoxville- so if you want to fish, go check it out! At the tournament, they’ll have tournament hats, LOTS of free food, and over $1,000 in prizes that are given away. There will also be a tent where you can see more about the life of Lori’s father, learn about different types of cancer, things you can do to prevent cancer, and see more about the families and children of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital’s oncology unit.

Last year, they raised $3,000.00 for East Tennessee Children’s Hospital!  Be a part of donating by buying a tshirt, and stop by the tournament the Saturday after the Gala if you’d like to join in on this cause and see where your money is going to!  If you have any questions, please contact Lori Staudenmaier! :)

Who loves TOMA? Who loves Gatlinburg?  Well- good news for you…the 112th Annual TOMA Convention this year is going to be held in Gatlinburg, TN from May 19th- 23rd!  There is one day within the convention dates that is specifically focused towards the students of LMU-DCOM.  That day is Friday, May 21st.  There will be several of our incredible faculty who are giving presentations and participating in the convention this year.  In addition, there will be representatives from some of TN’s awesome Residency programs, and there will be a presentation on succeeding in clinical rotations and Residency.

If you are considering attending the TOMA Convention on Friday, May 21st, please shoot me an email to let me know! It’s not binding by any means…but it’s just to get an idea of the interest as of now.  There will be more info coming soon once the final details are worked out re: transportation, times, etc.

S.D.O.Y Nomination Form

Student Doctor of the Year is an AWESOME opportunity to nominate a student (OMS-1, 2, and 3) who you think is a well-rounded individual and deserves some recognition!  All you have to do to nominate someone is to fill out the attached form and send it back to me by Wednesday, Wednesday, December 16th by noon.  This form is VERY easy to fill out and will probably take you 15 seconds…you don’t have to fill out the essay portion, but if you do, it can be used when the committee gets together to decide who LMU-DCOM’s Student Doctor of the Year is (so, it can’t hurt!).

Reasons to nominate for S.D.O.Y.:

-The 2010 Student D.O. of the Year (who gets selected from all of the S.D.O.Y.s from the schools) will be announced at the AACOM Annual Meeting in Bethesda

-$1,000 Scholarship for the national winner

-Every school will receive a silver plate to award to their winner

Application (to be distributed once nominations are received)

-Each area of the application will be scored using the following scale

-The total is then divided by 8 to determine the total score for the application portion (there is a blinded and unblinded portion of the application process)

Scale

Education: (1-3),  Awards: (1-5), Activities: (1-8), Community Service: (1-8), Convention Attendance: (1-3), Work: (1-5), Research & Publications:(1-5), Interests: (1-3)

Essay

-The Essay will be scored using the following scale

-The total is then divided by 8 to determine the total score for the application portion

Scale

Ideas and Content: (1-10), Organization & Fluency: (1-5), Expression of Ideas: (1-5)

Once someone is nominated, I’ll send them an application form to fill out.  This application is due back to me by Friday, January 22nd by 5 pm. That’s plenty of time…so make sure you give me your application by that date and time…or it’s no bueno!

Let me know if you have any questions!  Happy Holidays! :)

FALL FESTIVAL, WOO!!

SAA is hosting a Fall Festival on Saturday, October 17th from 4-6pm in the DCOM parking lot.  They’ve invited any DCOM organizations/clubs to participate in their event by having a “trunk or treat” station.  As a group, you’d host a vehicle and pop open your trunk, pass out candy, and have a game for kids or students to participate in. You can also use it as a way to get information out about your organization.  Please let me know if you’re interested in joining in on the fun…it’ll be fun for kids, students, faculty, and all who participate!  This is an event that’s only involving DCOM students/faculty/ friends and families…so bring your kids and/or host a station, and have a blast!

Even if you’re not participating in a station, definitely come stop by!!  Bring your kids, friends, and family!  Who doesn’t love a little pre-Halloween candy?!
