Congratulations to Omair Sheikh, OMS-1 for his selection of Student D.O. of the Month! Omair has been an asset to the students of LMU-DCOM. He puts great effort into his own studying, but not without a helping hand to his peers. Omair selflessly spends his time to tutor classmates that need the extra assistance and creates study-guides for others to utilize. Despite his own personal stressors, he is courteous and respectful to everyone he meets and continues to excel in the medical program. Omair was also one of two students from the LMU-DCOM Class of 2014 that was nominated for national recognition of Student D.O. of the Year. He represents our school well and the title of Student D.O. of the Month!

“Omair does not ask for anything in return for his help. He merely works hard to succeed and also strives to see his peers succeed as well.”
-Suzi Azzazy, OMS-1

“Omair takes being a student at DCOM to the next level; he is always willing to lend a helping hand.” -Alan Aiken, OMS-1

If you would like to nominate a student for Student D.O. of the month, please send a nomination paragraph to alicia.pazik@lmunet.edu! It’s been a great year; thank you to everyone who participated in making this program a success!

Congratulations to Taralyn Sowby, OMS-2 on her selection as Student D.O. of the Month!!

Taralyn is highly respected by her classmates as a club leader and diligent student. Her enthusiasm for osteopathic medicine shines through within school and beyond to the community. She has put in much effort to further her osteopathic manipulation skills and is known to offer her time to treat those in need. Taralyn will be attending the American Academy of Osteopathy Convocation this spring for the 2nd time, in which she will spend long hours each day learning and refining osteopathic manipulative techniques. She told the group of students that will be attending the convocation that her goal was to learn as much as she could to bring back and share with other students. This spirit to further educate herself to better help her colleagues and future patients is admirable and is why she has been chosen to represent LMU-DCOM as this month’s Student D.O. of the Year!

“Taralyn is a mother of two kids, the UAAO chapter rep for DCOM, helps puts together the UAAO activities and workshops, does well in school, and still has time to do research on the side. This would be impressive if she DIDN’T have two kids and a husband to take care off. Anyone with kids and a family knows that med school is that much harder when you have little ones to worry about.“ -Anonymous

The COSGP has set up a new way to record Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health (TOUCH) hours. Instead of recording your hours on the TOUCH form I have previously emailed out, you will now be logging your hours online. Each community service event will have to be logged in separately. When you have submitted your hours, the information will be forwarded to a Google document. The Google document is associated with my personal Google account, so any information listed will not be seen by anyone who isn’t supposed to see it. Here is the link to start recording your hours:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDJLQ1MwbUN3Y2VnXzRvdGVZVjJaWVE6MA

It is pretty self explanatory, but if you have any questions let me know.

REMINDER:
OMS I- your volunteer hours have to be in the time frame from the first day of class this year until March 31, 2011.
OMS II-IV-your volunteer hours have to be from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011.

Students with 50 or more TOUCH hours will receive a Silver TOUCH certificate. Students with 100 or more TOUCH hours will receive a Gold TOUCH certificate. Each individual will be honored during the TOUCH Ceremony during the spring semester.

While the volunteer hours will be kept track on an individual basis, on March 31st 2001, members of the community service committee will look at all of your hours and make sure that they fit the TOUCH criteria. After that, they are then sent to the national committee for further evaluation. So please make sure that your hours follow the guidelines so in the end you don’t have less hours than you thought because some of them didn’t count.

General Guidelines for what constitutes TOUCH hours- I have attached. They are far from specific and the COSGP is working on a set standard of regulations as to what they will accept for TOUCH hours. The main point is to make sure they are community orientated. For example: giving tours at school, tutoring, being an OPP TA and helping out with ACLS do not count towards touch hours.

Again, these are guidelines set by COSGP. When you turn your TOUCH hours in at the end of March this year, I and the community service committee members will make sure all the hours fit into the guidelines. Then the hours are sent to the COSGP where they go over the schools hours again and make sure they comply.

No self-nominations, sorry! Please email nominations by 12-15-10.

Now you all have had lots of practice with this type of deal with our local Student D.O. of the Month so I expect a bunch of nominations!

DCOMDO.com has been updated with a new theme – here are the highlights:

customized drop-down menu for pages, including club blog sites

a more compact weather widget

right side widgets, with improvements to come

gallery thumbnails at bottom, including with new photos from Mr. DCOM

Remember, DCOMDO.com is YOUR website. Club officers, feel free to post information on guest speakers and fundraising events in the Frontpage category. Future club leaders can look back at what you’ve done as they make plans. Don’t forget to tag posts with your club name, too!

Everyone is invited to share interesting news and articles you’ve found over break, tips on studying, website resources, tasteful humor, etc. If the item is of interest to all classes, choose the General category; otherwise select OMS-I, OMS-II, etc.

Final tip: TAGS. Choose or create a tag for your post if it would be handy to categorize it in another way besides the category it’s under. The tag cloud on the front page sidebar makes it easy to find related posts. Over the break some housekeeping will be done, and older posts will be tagged.

Please share your opinion on the redesign by voting in the poll in the right sidebar. If there are any features you’d like to see, or if you have suggestions or comments, please use the Suggestion Box on the menu or leave a comment below. Thank you!

Matt Johnson is a well-known member of the class of 2013 due to his drive to help classmates learn using all resources at hand, including the minds and experience of his colleagues and himself. Matt continuously strives to provide alternate learning options to facilitate the learning styles of his peers. He has organized various types of study groups and has relayed information back to the class after discussing the academic structure with administration. Matt recently organized a night of studying before the ACLS Megacode, a practical exam that all second year students were required to pass. He gathered fellow students with emergency protocol experience and his team taught students how to perform the hands-on skills that students had only read about. His team committed their own time to teach, answer questions, and quiz numerous students – an altruistic gesture that many students are very appreciative. In addition, Matt is one of the founding officers of the Operational Medicine Club at LMU-DCOM, titled STORM (Student Tactical Operational Rescue Medicine). His previous medical and military experience is unique and has served him well, but it is his attitude to share knowledge that has surpassed expectations as an osteopathic medical student. Congratulations to Matt Johnson, OMS-2 in his selection as October’s Student D.O. of the Month!!

CONGRATS TO JOSEPH BREWER for his selection as Student D.O. of the Month!!

Everyone knows that half of the struggle of the first year of medical school is adjusting to a new lifestyle and for many, a completely new (and very rural!) area and culture. Student doctor Brewer has stepped up and showed his accommodating and compassionate side to his fellow classmates by allowing not 1, but 2 of his colleagues to reside in his home alongside his family. Physicians hold the privileged responsibility of helping those in need and this gesture by Joseph exemplifies this attitude. Thank you to Joseph Brewer for supporting your classmates in an altruistic manner! We are proud to have you as one of our own and hope you enjoy your VIP parking for the month! (nominated by Sean Huff)

The August Student D.O. of the Month is MEMORY KASHUMBA!! Memory is a member of the Class of 2013 and was nominated by 2 of her peers! Included below are excerpts from the nominations submitted in her favor. Please be respectful and leave the SDOM VIP parking space available for Memory’s use this month.

“Many of our classmates are friendly and extremely helpful, but Memory really stands out… She has composed a web site dedicated to our courses, which contains several multiple choice questions for each lecture. She willingly shares these with all who ask. This summer, while pursuing her own time consuming interests, she found time to assist several of us who opted to retake some courses.” – Anonymous

“[Memory] is always driven, motivated, and all smiles, but what amazes me is how humble she remains. Prior to entering DCOM in July 2009 to join the class of 2013, Memory worked as a registered nurse in the state of Florida. She often speaks of times where she worked two full-time nursing jobs to support herself. A medical student, a pianist, and fluent in multiple languages, Memory is an extremely talented woman. One of 28 students chosen to embark upon the 4-year DO/MBA dual degree journey, Student Dr. Kashumba worked diligently throughout a summer with no vacation time to relax or see family, while tutoring daily for Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine II, completing her MBA assignments, punctual to group meetings, and also having to study her MFMII tutoring material for her group, sometimes until 4:00am. Erupting in excitement upon receiving the news that all of her classmates passed showed how much she cares about their well-being and success. … Driven by the epidemic taking place in her native country of Zimbabwe, Memory aspires to be a towering force against infectious disease. Memory is very deserving of school-wide recognition of her character, drive, determination, and spirit.” – Elton Taylor, III
